In Massachusetts, all criminal defendants are entitled to a trial by a jury of their peers; in District Court, this is six members randomly chosen from the community, in Superior Court it’s twelve. However, a defendant has the option to waive their right to a jury trial and opt for a bench trial instead.

Former Chicago police officer Drew Peterson was recently convicted of first degree murder in the 2004 death of his third wife, Kathleen Savio, who was found dead in her dry bathtub. The medical examiner declared the death accidental.
